HOPE

2 Lessons 11 Chapters

History is often described as “life’s teacher,” yet the way we teach it usually focuses on wars, conflict, and heroic violence. As a result, young generations learn that what truly matters are events of bloodshed and domination. Such narratives reinforce fear, competition, and national antagonism rather than coexistence. HOPE proposes a different approach: an alternative history that highlights periods of peace, cooperation, creativity, and prosperity. This perspective aligns with the concept of positive peace — not just the absence of violence, but the presence of justice, inclusion, flourishing relationships, and social well-being.
The project brings together educators and civil society actors, ensuring a multi-level impact consistent with Lederach’s peacebuilding framework. Its research section explores six peaceful civilizations across the Balkan region, demonstrating how societies thrive when they invest in coexistence instead of conflict. The practical section includes 16 theatre-based workshops that transform historical lessons into embodied experiences. Ultimately, HOPE seeks to cultivate a lasting culture of peace, guiding young people to envision and build a more just, collaborative future.
