EAR, Forming active European Citizens through the Dialectical Method and Theatre

7 Lessons 35 Chapters

The course is proposing the introduction of the dialectical method for the improvement of citizenship education in Europe, fact which will allow on the one hand to enhance the acquisition of social and civic competences, to foster knowledge, understanding and ownership of values and fundamental rights and on the other hand to enhance critical thinking among students and teachers. The dialectical method through its focus on reasoned arguments, gradual approach and wider notions (discovery of the truth) is very well placed in order to improve the key competencies of the students related with citizenship education.

The course is aiming also to use theatre techniques in order to support the dialectical method in the classroom. Theatre techniques are very important in order to support this process because theatre is providing to people and especially to young people attending high school, the chance to approach their own experiences or sensitive issues in a safe and creative way. Theatre is also a process that requires collectiveness and understanding between the participants. Through this collectiveness the differences and the contrasts between the different students are blunted and the mutual understanding is increased through identification and empathy. Furthermore, through story-making and fantasy offers a platform that will allow the students to discuss their ideas through a safe environment.

In order to allow the combination of the dialectical method with theatre, different forms of theatre are going to be used: Forum Theatre, Documentary Theatre, and Participatory theatre. The project is going to develop actions through which teachers and students will be able to develop a rational argumentation through theatre and its roles.
